Orthosis makes independent eating possible for a person with a high spinal cord injury.
Description
A wrist-stabilizing orthosis for interchangeable fork and spoon. The fork and spoon can be rotated to the side when bringing the orthosis along, so it occupies less space.
The user can put on and take off the orthosis, but cannot switch between spoon and fork. The orthosis stands by itself with cradles pointing upward. User places hand in cradles.
Authors comments
With these utensils the user can eat independently. It is important for him to be able to put it on and take it off on his own. With these utensils he does not need a device that pushes food against the edge, which he used to need.
Since the spoon/fork can swivel the device does not take much room when he brings it with him.
Orthosis for eating, along with wheelchair table, enable him to eat anywhere – in the garden or at a restaurant, even in places where the table is at the wrong height.
Build instructions
Ordinary utensils were used; they were cut and then attached using screws. The cradle in which the utensils sit is made of stainless steel.
