Island counter with adjustable height section and knee-space.
Start » Customized accessible kitchen
Several people can work simultaneously in this kitchen, both wheelchair users and ambulatory persons
Description
A two-part work island stands in the middle of the kitchen. One part has knee space and the height can be adjusted. The adjustable height section has a sink, counter space, and stove with ceramic cooktop. There is a pull-out board under the stove and a drawer in the front edge of the counter. Others can work standing at the rest of the kitchen island, which is at a fixed height. It also has a sink, counter space, and stove with ceramic cooktop. The section has a built-in cabinet with drawers (see separate tip), dishwasher, and storage unit on casters (see separate tip). Two of the kitchen walls are lined with a built-in cabinet with oven, microwave oven, refrigerator, and freezer (see separate tip). The appliances are the right height for wheelchair users. Tall cabinets store important daily equipment and foods are available at the right height in slide-out drawers.
Authors comments
With so many cabinets along the wall, adjustable height cabinets are not necessary. The user chose selected elements from a previous accessible kitchen remodeling project.
